Pick a Pace of Inductions

I’ve seen hypnotic inductions delivered at the pace of an auctioneer,  hurling suggestions that practically assail the subject, hammering at them until they seem to suddenly submit and collapse into a deep trance. I’ve also seen inductions done as if it were an impersonation of Ben Stein. “Bueller? Bueller?” Which is more effective? How do you know which to use?

Pondering that, I can acknowledge that both can be powerfully effective. Imagine sitting at an auction, neither bidding nor participating in any active way. For about an hour. I would definitely be lulled to a stupor until the gavel would come slamming down accompanied by “Sold!” (Perhaps that’s exactly what propels bidders at a successful auction!)

Now imagine a classroom with a substitute teacher with a voice like Ben Stein’s, slowly and monotonously lecturing about photosynthesis and the CO2/O2 conversion that manufactures the simple sugars that nourishes plants. For about an hour. A sure cure for the worst case of insomnia.

Which one do you select for your approach to induce a trance? Well, that depends. You’ll first need to calibrate to your subject. What is their pace or speed? That’s one of the first things you’ll need to observe. Watch their rate of breathing. Listen to their speed of speech. Are their body movements erratic, quick, nervous, or smooth, graceful and even? Begin to mirror and pace them. Here I will suggest that you then lead them into the opposite end of the spectrum. After all, it’s the hypnotist that paces and leads the subject and not the other way around. Lead a fast talker into a slower, calmer speed. Allow them a chance to breathe, really breathe, and guide them into a shift of rhythm. On the other hand, you might want to accelerate someone who normally speaks with measured deliberation. Trying to slow that person down even more could take a long while. More than likely, you’ll just be creating extra rapport but that’s about it. But if you start to incrementally accelerate your pace of speaking until you sound like an infomercial announcer selling kitchen aids on late-night TV, it can overwhelm a listener. Escaping into a trance wiould be a relief. In both cases, careful observation of your subject’s unconscious cues will be the signal to give the suggestion to “SLEEP!” and begin to deepen their trance.
